Essay on masks and unmasking
Mask in modern drama by Susan Harris Smith, 1984. Man is fixed by our fragile humanity to play a role in society; in this way, we irrevocably are fated to be a masker. Maskers lose their identity; either they are trapped in their public mask, or they take on a collective identity. Man's are driven into their mask by their helpless fear, and according to the author, man cannot refuse to mask, for to deny the social necessity of masking results in exclusion from society and death.
